The composition of air is 78% nitrogen, 21% oxygen and 1% trace gasses. The trace gases include argon, neon, methane, helium, carbon dioxide and water vapor. Nitrogen is added to the atmosphere by plants and animals that decay. Oxygen is a byproduct of photosynthesis.
